First Day of School Letter

WELCOME TO SECOND GRADE

Welcome to second grade at Iraan Elementary! This year in second grade we have some new faces, some positive changes, and a wonderful adventure ahead of us! We will be doing lots of fun and exciting new activities this year. Watch your child’s daily folder for notes and refer to SeeSaw about what we are doing or items we might be requesting. I’ve tried to include some information that will be beneficial for you to know about our classrooms. My goal is to keep an open line of communication. If you ever have a question or concern, please feel free to call or message me.

DAILY FOLDER/ READING LOG

Each day your child will bring home a blue folder with notes, school work, and a reading log. Each date mentioned in the reading log will be reading homework each evening. Your child is expected to read 20 minutes each evening and parents are expected to sign daily. Please DO NOT sign for the entire week. It is really important that your child returns this folder daily to school. The reading log will be graded at the end of the week. We will start the reading log on Monday, August 21st.

DISCIPLINE

I will be implementing ClassDojo for behavior and SeeSaw for parent/teacher communication. Please sign up for both ClassDojo and SeeSaw to stay informed on what is happening in the classroom. This is a great opportunity to be informed about your child’s behavior and events happening at school.

 SPELLING

Your child will bring home a spelling list each Monday in their spelling notebook and will be tested on Friday of each week (unless it is a short week, then test will be on Thursday). Your child will have spelling homework each evening which will be completed in their spelling notebook. The spelling notebook will be turned into the teacher at the end of the week for a weekly grade. Spelling homework will start Monday, August 21st followed by their first spelling test on Friday, August 25th.

READING

Once the library opens and we are allowed to check out books, your child will be allowed to take AR tests. The best way to improve reading is to practice, practice, and practice.

 VISITORS

Please remember that all visitors are not allowed on campus unless you are dropping off a child late, picking up a child, or at the request of a teacher or principal.

IMPORTANT TIMES

School begins at 7:45am and dismissal is at 4:10pm. Breakfast will be served in the cafeteria 7:00am-7:35am. Students may come to the classroom starting at 7:40am. Your child must be in the classroom before the 7:50am tardy bell. DISMISSAL: Second grade will be dismissed at 4:10pm in front of the elementary office entrance. Please be sure to have your child picked up on time. If your child has not been picked up by 4:20pm, they will go to the office to make a phone call. Any time after 4:20pm, your child must be picked up at the office, and (s)he will have to be signed out.

 ATTENDANCE

Missing just one day puts your child behind. We keep a swift pace in 2nd grade and so it is very important to attempt to keep absences at a minimum. If your child is absent, please send a written note the following day to turn into the office.
